As students progress through elementary school, reading, basic math, and understanding of foundational concepts in other subjects are primary goals of the curriculum. The upper elementary curriculum builds upon the reading and math learned to explore more complex topics in areas such history and the sciences.
Kindergarteners are guided as they emerge as young readers and mathematicians. Time is enjoyed gathering with their classmates each morning for the daily calendar as they gain awareness of their role as community members. They revel in learning about our country's history through patriotic songs and joyful marches around the classroom. These excited learners take part in the beloved annual kindergarten activities such growing butterflies and planting flowers each spring in the Mother's Garden. These activities take the classroom outside where this age group thrives. Through these hands on activities science is brought to life for our kindergarteners each year.
In Grade One, the science of reading is fully utilized as students enter this vital year of growth and learning. Math centers full of manipulatives engage students in exciting ways. A true love of learning is fostered in the Grade One classroom as play and learning go hand and hand. A highlight of the year is the All Saint's Day Mass. Grade One leads the entire school is this holy day. Dressed as the saints they have researched, students present the information of their chosen saint before the school community in this special Mass. Celebrations continue throughout the year as projects are undertaken for the special people in their lives, for Black History Month, and so on... There are no dull days in Grade One!
Second Grade is a special year for our Catholic students as they receive preparation for the sacrament of First Penance and First Communion.
Third Graders at St. Peter School glow with excitement as they develop their academic skills and evolve into independent learners. The children move from concrete to more abstract thinking as they plan and problem solve. As they develop deeper empathy for the situations of others, the meaning of school wide service projects comes into focus. Daily morning meetings and class read alouds are just two ways the class connects with one another. Students gain expertise in 3rd Grade math concepts, using technology across the curriculum. In their Living Museum projects, students bring to life a figure in history where they integrate reading, writing, art, social studies, science and public speaking skills.
Fourth Grade is an exciting time in literature, with "read alouds" and book clubs as student refine their reading and literary analysis skills. Students continue to build on their math, science, and technology knowledge as these worlds continue to expand for these maturing learners. The study of regions of the United States culminates in the State Fair project. After selecting a state to study, students conduct in-depth research that is then turned into a digital and physical presentation that they share with the school community.
Fifth Grade is a critical year in preparing students for middle school! The year is devoted to ensuring the foundations are strong in reading, writing, science, mathematics, and technology. Students delve deeper into our rich local history, studying topics such as the Gaspee Affair, the first blow for freedom on the path to the American Revolution. They undertake research projects and build presentations on different Native American tribes as their studies guide them in learning about the first people to call this land home.
